Saul Griffith – Scarcity and abundance

Saul Griffith gives a presentation in which he breaks down his energy consumption for his entire life. Including embodied energy and he presents his website .
From 12.30 it gets really interesting, from this point he start to look at the world and the energy consumption and CO2 production of different countries. His company made some prediction models to go with different CO2 levels, where we will be if nothing changes or the changes we have to make to get to an “acceptable” level of climate change. 450 ppm would result in a 2 degrees C increase in global temperature which would still have a drastic impact on the world. He calculates that with current consumption patterns 3 TW (Terawatt) of fossil fuels is the maximum we can consume if we don’t want to pass the 450 ppm CO2 target. With current world consumption calculated to be around 16 TW and a clean energy production of 1,5 TW in place there would be a demand for 11,5 TW of new clean energy sources.

From this point (20.45) the presentation really takes off, because alternatives to fossil fuels are examined, but also what their potential energy might be and at what rate we should be implementing to get to the 450 ppm target.
This presentation is accessible, straight to the point and switches between world scale and personal scale in a very clear and direct way. Highly recommended!
