European fish stock will decline further
European fishery ministers have met again this December and once again decided that managing fish stocks at Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) levels is not their cup of tea. Instead they are more concerned with job retention in a dark economic times. They fail to see that not complying to the sustainable part from MSY could mean that a whole industry might collapse in a couple of years.
The quota for north sea herring got increased by 100% instead of the advised 15% increase. According to Dutch secretary of Agriculture the increase shows that long-term management plans:"It also shows that sustainabilty, which we as European Union pursue, is an economical success."
